On the cusp

I am less than 24 hours from starting the hike. We are on the road in South Carolina driving down from Baltimore. We've driven through a good deal of snow In the higher elevations, which makes me nervous as I was hoping to settle into hiking for a few days before we hit snow. We'll see what Georgia looks like.

  1. Just wondering how much time it took you to research & prepare for this adventure. I've read many books about women hiking the AT & it always has been in the back of my mind as something I want to do some day! But, with kids & daily responsibilities of running a household, I put it off & will read your post with much interest & pretend I'm there sharing your amazing journey with you in spirit! Looking forward to hearing about it! . . . .And yes: Who is Pete??

  2. I started researching, planning, and shopping for gear in about February. I have to say, one of the best methods of research I found was talking to clerks and other people I met at REI and Whole Earth Provision. I met a few people who'd hiked the trail and picked their brains, and I talked to some guys who did mountaineering to get ideas about what to expect in winter. Of course, no amount of planning can really prepare you for the trip. It's just about jumping in and having fun (even when it's not fun).

Pete is my guy. We met a few years ago, and the trip was his idea.
